Chapter 6: The Mean Bean
Later that day Betty caught Ethel entering the coffee shop. Betty was furious. Ethel began defending herself, then stopped. Why was Betty there? Angry words were exchanged, then the two women marched to the counter to place their orders: Betty wanted 10lbs. and Ethel ordered 30lbs. Before Betty could object, Hector explained he was almost out. Everyone seemed to love this new coffee. He had called to order more but there was no record of the coffee ever having been delivered. They both purchased 2 lbs. each, and the coffee was gone. Ethel and Betty left the shop. Neither spoke, nor did they walk home together, as usual.
Ethel and Betty did not have coffee together the following morning. Each day they came to the shop and sat alone.
