I was thinking terminal illness with a touch of denial leading to the confusion. That’s poetry for you though, meaning in the eye of the beholder and all that. It had a nice flow and meter to it, I thought. That part at least really fits your explanation of it being in a dream. Something eerily comforting about the expressed or apparent level of acceptance and comfort about the whole passing.
I was lost in the flow of the fading away, (a good thing) wondering why people were so happy with the protagonist, as if a hero, but it all didn’t matter anyway. It kind of says something about our legacies.
