Before the Battle

“When do you think we’ll be able to try to send me home?” Lila asked. She and Emrys were sitting away from the campfire, sharing a bowl of stew. Arthur was in his tent with Ector and the other knights, planning for war.

“We might have to wait till the end of battle,” Emrys said. He smiled grimly. “I know you’re technically Arthur’s page, but you’ll have to keep me alive too, won’t you?”

“I suspect you can keep yourself alive better than the others know.” Lila smiled back.

Emrys nudged her shoulder with his. “So this world where you come from…women are just knights alongside the men?”

“Not quite,” she said. “But women are allowed to prove themselves capable warriors.”

Emrys waggled his eyebrows. “So after conquest on the battlefield, a woman can claim a prize from the captives –”

Arthur said, “Lila, I need you to attend to me.”

Emrys and Lila looked up, surprised. Lila handed her spoon to Emrys.

“Thanks for sharing,” she said. She followed Arthur back to his tent. “Is everything all right, My Lord?”
