The Ring Goes Southeast (Scene 1)
“Gandalf,” Elrond began, “this is Spock. He has a clarity of thought that is singular among mortals. I ask that you hear him.”
“Gandalf the Grey, live long and prosper," Spock said.
Gandalf looked deeply at Spock, assessing him. “No, you’re not an elf, are you? Very similar in appearance, but very different, I believe.”
“Your perception is well known.” Spock inclined his head. He continued, “Gandalf, Master Elrond asked me to listen to the deliberations of the Council because he believes that I can help. Having considered what I’ve heard, I have misgivings about the Council’s plan. Sending the Fellowship on foot plays into both Sauron’s and Saruman’s hands by providing them the time they need to marshal their armies. Delay gives advantage to your opponents, increases the potential death toll, and increases the probability that the mission will fail.”
Gandalf silently considered the vista of the dell for several moments. Quietly, sadly, he said, “I agree.” He turned. “What have you in mind, Spock?”
