Some Assembly Required

“Tom! What have you been doing for the last week?”
“Assembling a computer.”
“For a week?”
“Yes.”
“How? How does it take a solid week to assemble a computer?”
“It’s been very in-depth.”
“… Is that a laptop keyboard? Are you building a laptop from scratch?”
“Well, I wanted it to be portable.”
“I didn’t even know you could do that.”
“It’s tricky, but possible. You take a computer-on-module, attach it to an LCD controller, make your own power stuff and heat sinks, and get it in a case. The hardest part was working with my mech eng friend to get the hardware fabbed.”
“You’re building a laptop.”
“You’re really hung up on this, aren’t you?”
“You’re building your own laptop. Why?”
“Because I can do more. For you, a computer is a collection of parts. You put them together, and it works. For me, it’s a spiritual experience. I handle each part, understanding it, imbuing it, before I assemble it. It becomes an extension of me. Plus, it’ll be waterproof.”
“… You and your spiritual experience have fun.”
