Awkward Encounters
The next day I stumbled out of the exam, my mind a mush and collapsed into Connor’s arms.
“How’d it go?” he smiles.
“I’m gonna fail,” I cried. “I’ma fail so bad. Gi’me my F now.”
“You’ll be fine,” he laughed.
“How did you find it?” a voice came from behind me. I turned and saw Jacob standing a few feet away, looking completely normal. I felt like backing into Connor and pulling his arms around me and never coming out. Instead I felt Connor’s hand in mine.
“What do you want, Jake?”
“I’m sorry. I just-” His eyes scanned the floor as if searching for the words. “It’s just that I love you… and you don’t love me?”
I didn’t say anything, just looked down at the floor. Someone called my name from across the hall.
“Coming!” I yelled. “Come on, Connor.”
I felt bad leaving Jake standing there, but soon enough a gang of guys surrounded him as they compared exam questions. I held Connor’s hand tight as he whispered in my ear: “Well done.”
