so the bold words work, but the italic ones don’t. however, reading them with emphasis makes me forget what the poem is all about! It’s a defense mechanism to forget a bad past. Maybe it’s best left back there. Move on.

The thing with the speaker is that they do actually move on, but another, equally significant event takes place in their life (i.e. break-up, an irreplaceable loved one with cancer, etc.) which forces them to want to forget the experience all over again. In the end, the speaker winds up with nothing they want to remember.
