Home Alone

There was something in the house with me.

My family had gone out to dinner. Thanks to two tests on Monday, I stayed home to study.
There was no one to help me. I was alone. Except for the curved lamp in my room, the whole house was dark.

Sounds combining purring and clicking rolled up from downstairs. I didn’t know what it was but it didn’t sound like anything I had ever heard before.

There was a crash as something broke. Then the sound I was dreading- the creak of the stairs as it ascended.

I crept off my bed, tip-toed to my door and locked it. The click as the lock engaged made me wince. It was too loud. I backed away from the door, holding my breath, as if that would make me quieter.

The door to my room shuddered and from the other side there was loud snuffling that ran along all of the edges.

One of my windows overlooked our slanted roof, that was the one I opened. A slam rattled my door. I climbed out my window as fast as I could.

Whatever was coming after me- I could hear more of them below.
