Dogfighter
Cpt. Frank Williams of the USAAF depressed the firing mechanism on his P-51’s flight stick and launched a three second burst of .50 caliber Browning machine gun rounds into a diving Fw 190. The heavy rounds ripped gaping holes into the airframe and cockpit before shearing the left wing off completely. Frank doubted the German’s ability to bail out with his plane spiraling out of control towards the ground below.
Smoking blue tracers zipped by the canopy of Frank’s fighter and there was a metallic crunch from the rear. He throttled forward into a steep dive as a second burst of cannon fire bracketed his craft. The hollow propellers began to shake violently as the engine picked up speed. Frank prayed he could hold the stick steady enough for his Mustang to out-dive the tailing German.
He glanced back in the mirror only to see the spiraling paint job on the Fw 190’s nose and the quick flashes of another burst. Exploding cannon rounds shredded the Mustang, ripped Frank into chunks, and set the engine ablaze.
