'At Least They'll Say I Tried To Do The Impossible'

Mars.

There were always stories about how it is unsustainable for life.

That was what humankind wanted to prove, that that ‘fact’ was false. And that’s when they asked for volunteers.

They wanted someone to go that wasn’t worried about dying. And that specific requirement kept many from going on this “Death Mission,” or at least that’s what they called it. But I volunteered.

“I want to go.” I said. Those four words left most in shock.

“Are you sure?” Asked the head of the space station. “You might not come back alive, if you come back at all.”

“When do I leave?”

“Tonight.” Let’s just say, that night, I ate all the Earth food possible. Hamburgers, hotdogs, pizza, soup, salad, and ice cream too.

At 20:00 sharp, I was ready for liftoff.

“3, 2, 1!” And off I went. I got to Mars, and when I ran out of oxygen, I learned what I had tried to deny: Mars was unsustainable for life.

‘At least they’ll say I tried to do the impossible.’ I thought as I took my last breath.
