Dangerous Boundaries: Operating on Instinct

His hands flexed, almost of their own accord. He itched to go inside and find out what had happened. It was his job as a Magistrate of the Interior, but more than that it was his nature to be inquisitive. Mysteries called to him. Oddities that most took for granted, stuck out like wolves among sheep and sometimes had to be dealt with as sharply.

Lukas took a deep breath and twisted the key to his new room in the lock. It was none of his concern, unless Sirach asked for his help, or he became aware of a law being broken. Besides, he already had enough work ahead of him if even half the rumors held any truth.

The heavy tumblers turned easily, and the door fell open. Light from the covered lamps in the hallway gently pushed the shadows back

It didn’t take long to light the trio of thick candles with the flame from the nearest of the hall lamps, giving the room a bright, if not pleasant glow.

He gave the door opposite him a final, regretful look, before firmly closing the door to his own room- and locking it.
