The quantum entanglement of the Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen paradox is clear evidence that free will is something we choose to believe.
I liked your story. Ironical, because you won’t be enslaved by your chemical imbalances, but it’s the very imbalances that drive you to give it all up.
Also ironic is the claim to “live his own life”…by making himself dead…which isn’t really living. As such, it’s a nice example of one of the contradictions of suicide. The first paragraph with the fragment about work didn’t work for me. I know what you meant, but since it was one more item on the list in the previous sentence it just read awkwardly. Same vein, for consistency sake, the middle fragment in paragraph three should have a question mark. So really neat idea and intro/debate on a topic around suicide, but just a few editing type sloppy bits.
The questions are tangible and the confusion is palpable—you feel him swaying over this abyss. Also, I like that with this push and pull, he seems to just…slip off as if perhaps he hadn’t necessarily intended it. It does make you feel like you have the power to bring someone back from the edge if they were willing to be so contemplative. Provoking.
This quandary of chemicals dictating an existence hits close to home for me so I especially enjoyed watching the paradox play out. I really did love his simply slipping off…no real push or leap…still indicating that lack of free will. Excellent.
