Yes, yes it is. I honestly understand every single concept here, and the rumour that I just strung a dozen buzz words together without understanding them is completely untrue.
This is awesome :) Brings back memories of Gattica, or even our huge class discussions on genetic modification.
I love how the way you describe it shows that human genetic modification and selection is so easy, that people can “upgrade” when they want, just like computers or robots. Brilliant!
considering this is the 63rd day after conception, it would develop into whatever, I say, furry fetishes will result in some interesting mutations.. but think of the x-men type repercussions! My favorite part is the ‘minor neurological side-effects’. Hahahaha! And then the idea of backup kids.. that’s kind of creepy.
It’s pretty much like a computer system, you have a copy of your brain somewhere safe in case of accidents or if you want to upgrade yourself, then you can copy yourself over to a new clone and ‘delete’ the body you are in now. But if you do want an upgrade, you need the ‘drivers’ for that new body part so it works, like a bigger visual cortex for your new huge eyes or a new cortex added on to allow you to use your dolphin sonar. The more you modify your body, the less your brain actually resembles a human brain. Then comes the body horror and furry fanfic :3
The 63rd day was arbitrary, just needed something to say it was parents allowing unnecessary brain surgery on a child for the horror kick and the ‘neurological side-effect’ line :)
I think having to explain it this much means it really needed all the stuff I cut out to get it to 1024. To the Scribertorium!
Aw, techno-babble. How we love thee. I actually think the piece gets bogged down in it just a bit. The last paragraph feels like the most free, and the I think the rest of the piece would have benefited from that same sort of freedom. Very delightful spin on the topic, however, that is a nice reward for the reader.
In the midst of taking a psychology course and studying neuroscience, this story makes perfect sense to me. I can second the negation of said rumors against the validity of Akhelios and his writing. Bring on the furry fic.
