Lifted Off and Left Behind

Thump.
The wonder of the bipedal structure is that it is so precarious that when frozen in a candid position, the thing would more likely fall then stay upright.

Thump.
At least, that’s how he saw it everyday as he walked to nearby School, passing the various rock figures now nearly obscured by the jungle fauna. At that time, no one really thought about the position they were in when they were to be Lifted. They didn’t really expect anything.

Thump.
School taught him once about the whole thing, how visitors from beyond the canopy once came and offered the ten billion humans immortality, how nearly everyone accepted, and how society broke down when they solidified all at once, leaving just the small handful to try and continue living.

Thump.
At least those who were Left had an ample supply of stone. His father was splitting one up now with his mallet to make into a chair.
He usually left the face untouched; he said, “These people wanted to be immortal, so at least in this form they could be.”
