I wasn’t happy with the, “…between it and I,” line either but hit a grammar block on the better way to say it. I’m very open to suggestions on what the correct verbage would be there.

Just on the technical point, you could use a collective pronoun like us, and rephrase the sentence slightly to have the ‘dog lumbering between us’.
