On Being Alone and Happy

It’s raining outside the grocery store, and the thunder periodically brings light to the night sky.

“It’s been too long” She says while looking at me, speaking up as to be heard over the rain. She takes a few steps closer and speaks again “Maybe we can meet up again sometime?”

“Does meeting in a supermarket even count as meeting up in the first place?” I say loudly, trying, just like her, to conquer the rain. Looking back at her, I crack a smile. “Maybe we should keep things they way they were.”

She looks at me in confusion before speaking again. “Why though? You were happy. I know you were.”

I raise my hand to my chin and scratch the stubble growing there.

I grasp my shopping bag a bit tighter before looking out into the rain again. “Yeah, I was”

Walking out into the rain, I turn back for a final farewell. “Goodnight, Lyssa.”

She didn’t follow me this time.
