A Reduction of Circumstance
The grain of wood beneath her feet extended out in all directions, smooth but for the minute imperfections in the finish. In the distance, mountainous shapes lingered in shadow, revealed only by the light cast from a great ball of fire on the horizon.
Utterly disoriented, she desperately sought for some indicator, some sign as to where she might be.
To her right was a large, pale mound surrounded by a pile of rectangular masses the size of small houses, and piercing through the top was a massive tangled shape that reached into the obscurity of the dark sky.
She continued inspecting her environment until she began to hear muffled noises issuing from the base of the mountains.
The noises grew closer, and she peered into the darkness.
Suddenly, a maelstrom of figures burst into the light. What looked like a horde of vicious, dark eyed beasts pursued a retreating band of men.
A creature bit one of the men, and she saw that he did not tear and bleed, but rather crumbled.
Like gingerbread.
Realization struck.
