Mississippi

I felt the rumbling in the ground.

“Get up, quick!” I shouted to my friend, sleeping beside me. Within a few seconds we were backed away from the tracks and lowered ourselves to the ground. Around the curve, the train appeared. Slow speed, wouldn’t normally be a particularly difficult jump, but the rain hindered our grip on the ground.

It was far too dark to see the railroad engineer, though it was probably because the headlight was shining so bring in our eyes. As the first few carts passed us, our eyes directed to the 8th cart behind the lead, the door looked busted and easily slidable. As always, Mike ran ahead first to test it. The fucker slid open like it was greased with butter.

Smiling, I ran behind him. He slipped once as he pulled himself up, but nothing too bad. Once he got his footing inside, he reached his hand out for me. Grabbing it, he pulled me up. I stumbled inside and picked my head up and looked at him.

“Westbound” he said.

We both smiled.
