“As mortals watch the day, colossal rains fall into the emptiness.”
Those were the last words he had said as he died, and I’d never understood them until now that I stood at the edge of everything, invisible in my raiment of rags. Lightning stabbed from the leaden sky like knives from God, illuminating my shadow in harsh black and white while the wind howled into my face. It rampaged through the empty spaces, picking up and then discarding leaves and unwanted crisp packets like a demented goth at a Camden stall. I was alone in a crowd of millions…
