Im glad I took the time to look at your tags after I read this. Yay for fallout! It was the first thing I thought of. So many things made this feel very…everyday. for a wasteland.
I see the narator and Kara as two birds driven by their instictive natures. Kara driven to fly off and search for something more, something missing. The narrator, resigning himself to his perched cage, enjoying what little “treats” he has.
So in the end, I understand why the caged bird sings.
