“Are you absolutely sure that the Truce still holds?” Sirach asked quietly.
Lukas voice was confident. “I am. If the Truce is broken by one of us, the others will hunt down the offender and render final judgment, the alternative is an Empire in chaos, and no one is insane enough to walk in the Goddess’ footsteps.”
“There are those that thrive during turmoil, those that prefer times of war to peace, those like-”
“Midden.” Lukas finished. “And we can probably lump some of the other Changed in with him. Why do you speak thus?”
Sirach looked down at the table. “I don’t think that what happened in your room was an accident. Your last letter indicated that you expected to arrive weeks ago. If you hadn’t been bogged down in the first snows of the season, you would’ve been in the room. And if anyone had intercepted the letter first, they might have been expecting you.”
“That’s a lot of if’s, but there may be some truth to what you say.” Lukas rose to his feet. “Show me the room and let us see what we can find.”
