Intriguing. Seems like it could go a couple of different ways. In the end, it made me think of a Twilight Zone episode.

I really wanted to add the word ‘and’ to the beginning of that last line, but I couldn’t find a way to rewrite it with one fewer syllable and still convey the same meaning.

Effective use of a semicolon conveyed the intent quite well. I like this!
