The Closet, Part 1

“What was that? Oh my God, I’m not cut out for this. I think my heart is going to explode.” Jenna’s mind was racing. She looked over at Rob who was guarding the door. He moved his hands up and down rapidly… come on – faster! Focus. She looked down at her hands, they were shaking. She clenched them into fists, taking a slow deep breath. She opened them again. Better. She kept flipping through the files, but this time her hands weren’t as clumsy. In the P section she found something that might be relevant, “Patient X.”

“This has to be it,” she hadn’t realized she had spoken aloud, but she heard Rob gasp. Her head snapped up, eyes wide like a deer caught in headlights. “MOVE!” he mouthed.

She shoved the folder into the back of her pants. She almost panicked but made herself slide the drawer closed silently and held her breath as she crossed the room. The front door opened as they stepped out of Father’s office into the hallway and forced themselves to walk into the kitchen playing out their fake argument.
