I love the projection of his god Fear onto what we would consider regular, emotional fear. The yelling to startle them, for instance—it’s just that in our eyes, but in his it’s “calling his god.” Nice job of balancing both perspectives.

I’m not quite sure why but I immediately imagine the person in this story to be female. Somehow, that gave it a different kind of significance. Very nice.

I love the clash of the “simple” beliefs with the “sophistication” of the doctors.

Like Silven, I also read this as a female narrator. A warrior, none the less, but definitely female.

I also saw her as a female. Fear (in this story) is a woman-god, and I naturally envisioned the lead character in her image.

It’s interesting how many of you are seeing the narrator as a woman, since I’m not entirely sure I had it pegged either way in my head.
