Under Pressure

Inspector Perry glanced furtively at the clock, beads of sweat forming on his brow. Then he directed his attention back to Doctor Layug. Behind him, the fan strained in a failing attempt to cool off the room.

Doc Layug wouldn’t stop tapping her foot. She scratched her arm. Then her leg. Then she took a swig from a half-empty water bottle on the table. Scratched her arm again.

Perry stood up, too quickly, and began walking across the room to stand in front of the fan. But a sudden head-rush forced him to sit back down or risk collapsing. He saw stars.

Penn’s expression was the epitome of the phrase “poker face.” He leaned back in his chair calmly, his eyes darting back and forth between his two companions.

“Well?” Said Penn. “It’s been ten minutes. Someone’s gotta choose.”

“Don’t rush me!” shouted Perry. Layug gritted her teeth and started pacing around the room.

“Fine,” Penn decided. “If you won’t choose… We’re eating at Subway tonight.”

Doc Layug smiled as Perry fainted, landing with a hard thud.
