The story is awesome, but if the 10 year old doesn’t know what color chestnut is, I doubt he knows “demure” either. Though it is written from the third-person perspective, so you’re allowed to do that. It really stands out to me though, because I remember the first time I ever encountered that word, and it wasn’t until high school.
I think it’s perfect otherwise, in that it would take most people back to their first crush and remind them how they felt to understand how the protagonist feels.
Though Fyora’s critique is a fair, I feel compelled to rebut that although I’m pretty sure what ‘demure’ means, I’m still a little fuzzy on what a chestnut looks like. I can’t say for sure when I learned ‘demure’, but since I still haven’t nailed down what chestnuts look like, I’m leaving it in. Sometimes I’m just persnickety like that.
I believe I read somewhere that girls classify colors more definitively and will give unusual/more specific names for colors. (Whereas a man would say brown, a woman would say chestnut, auburn, or ochre, depending on the shade. (Or what you’re talking about))
I use the wikipedia entries on colors. Though browser and display settings can even change those. {LOL, wikipedia says chestnut is a red.}
Whatever chestnut really is, I’m just going off a song. The protagonist got it from a song, and I didn’t make that up. There is a classic song with that line. It’s an allusion.
