Rule of Thumb, check it twice

Re: Investigation of the death of Patrick Scott.
Sir,
As per your request we have conducted a second examination of the location of Mr. Scott’s death.
I regret to inform you that we did seem to miss some evidence on our preliminary examination. A body part, specifically the decedent’s right thumb, was discovered on our second examination. The body part was found on the floor behind a decorative tapestry and not immediately visible on our initial examination.
Examination of the specimen indicates that it was probably severed as a result the impact of one of the bullets that subsequently caused Mr. Scotts death.
This new evidence does not contradict any previous conclusion reached by my department regarding the manner or cause of death.
Unless there is further evidence to examine, I believe this will conclude our portion of the investigation.
Yours,
T.J. Matteson, MD, ME
