Actually, The Catcher in the Rye is a very good book. Of course, I didn’t think so back when I was forced to read it in high school, but having read it again since, it’s actually not that bad.
Also, fun fact, it’s the favorite book of a great many of the world’s most infamous criminals.
Go figure, eh?
I did enjoy the theatrical nature of this story, though, so I give you pencils. :D
I was never forced to read it at school. I got it from the library a couple of weeks ago and have been seriously struggling to get through it. There’s so little happening that there is nothing to distract me from the sandpaper-to-eyeballs experience of the vernacular prose.
Miserable teenager or no, I have so little sympathy for Holden that I just want to punch him and yell “Get over yourself” again and again and again. He’s completely self-absorbed and guilty of everything he hates in others. He sabotages himself at every turn and constantly proclaims that he doesn’t feel like it at the moment.
He may be an accurately-drawn disaffected adolescent, but he’s about a thousand miles from the kind of person I want to associate with for pleasure.
Does he have to announce every single noun by an “and all” suffix?
I am often insulted for my intense dislike of The Catcher in the Rye. Perhaps it is the result of my raising or something built into my generation, but I couldn’t squeeze a single ounce of enjoyment from that book.
@science, you can’t even get a pic for THIS profile. Hey this was an awesome way to present this. i love catcher in the rye but this is a great way to tell a story.
Sorry it is like a good smell reminds you of something. I was reading catcher in the rye in the last summer i spent with my dad before he was killed and it just always reminds me of that summer.
I don’t think i’ve read it.. why? because my education had to have been lacking, they must have gone through literature book reform during my high school years.. I’ve missed a lot of the classics… However this movie announcer style of presenting your rant, is fabulous!
I liked Catcher enough not to hate it, but that might be because there’s age similarities. Although, as much as I tolerated it, I could completely appreciate the seeming lack of plot, Holden’s apathetic nature, and what-have-you that you mentioned. You pulled this off very nicely.
Now, out of curiosity: have you ever read The Sun Also Rises, and if you have what is your opinion of that?
I’ve not yet been forced to read Catcher in the Rye but thanks for giving me something to look forward in my high school education! I love your rant on it, though!
I had to read Catcher in the Rye in honors English. ethelfrog, you speak to my pain. The only thing I recall is the scene with the little one on the merry-go-round. All those hours reading, for a merry-go-round.
Even though I enjoyed this book it is far from my favorite novel. Holden is a whiny little bitch. I have to admit I liked reading this more than I liked reading the actual book. Laughing my ass off in Durango!
