I said the water chant before every drink, every bath, and every time I was going to use a drop of it. The water goddess had blessed us this year with enough rain for our crops, our livestock, and our well. We must have been doing something right, and it was probably the chanting.

Last year the water goddess turned her back to us, no water for two months; our crops dwindled, our clothes went dirty, we ate corn cob jelly on biscuits made with what little snow we did get all winter since there wasn’t any harvest to preserve.

This year we are doing it right, sacrificing at the water altar, burning incense of water reeds, and chanting. We will never forget the water goddess again!
