What a bizarre dystopia. A totalitarian state of computer geeks? Strange with lots of unanswered questions about this reality but definitely intriguing.

The whole punishment thing felt very 1984… Really nice, and the sheep analogy really embodies the whole dystopian idea thing – good work!

What scared me more was not the idea of this being a future dystopia, but that I read it as this story happening present day. Very well described; the character seems interesting, even for a sci-fi rebel.

More Brave New World than 1984, I felt.

I’m not familiar with Snow Code, I’ll have to check that out. And would you believe I’ve never read Brave New World? I know, right. But in full disclosure I did finish rereading 1984 literally just a few days ago, so it’s still fresh in my writing mind. It’s so hard to hide my inspiration from well-read folks like you!

int *a; a=1; *a=4;

would make for a more guaranteed segfault, but only slightly so since uninitialized pointers in optimized code aren’t zero’d on creation, so an uninitialized pointer might actually randomly contain a value that is ok to write over (as regards SegFaults, not necessarily saying that he’s not overwriting some important data being used elsewhere). Honestly, the best way is to write (or know the exploit to) a bad device driver because you can usually get past a lot of the OS protections that way, making your SegFault stick.

I’ve never considered the idea of a SegFault hurting. But I’m not worried, my virtual machines can’t physically hurt me.
