Almost the perfect burglary
Most burglaries entail That Lurching Feeling. I lost a handbag, a MacBook, a mobile phone, a pair of D&G sunglasses. But I didn’t bat an eyelash. No, no Lurch for me. Calm and collected, me. Because I had… overinsured.
Within a week, I replaced each of the new items, spec’d up. And the icing on top was that I’d been religious about backing up. It was all on the hard drive I’d bought as a leaving present, a few months after I left The Creep.
When the new MacBook arrived, the dealer took in the hard drive, and handed it over with every photograph, every email, every file perfectly restored.
I was smug as slime. Til I happened to look at a video on YouTube. That Lurching Feeling. The new laptop was logged into… his account. There on the home page, a list of his videos, with a freeze-frame of each opening shot. It was unmistakeable. Full-frontal, neck down, slouching on the familiar cream couch, giving it his best, one-handed. I turned off the machine. Some things shouldn’t be backed up.
