The Play
The play was billed as the Comedy of the Century. It had a Tony Award winning Director, and an ensemble cast of Hollywood Megastars. Critics declared it the Must See Play of the Year, even before the first audition.
The long awaited opening night arrived. The buzz backstage lead to a series of mishaps, resulting in a fire that could not be contained. Stars and stagehands fled to the back alley; one lone extra, dressed in a jester’s outfit, decided to warn the audience of the impending danger.
The jester pushed through the curtains, arms flailing wildly, declaring that there was a fire backstage. The crowd sat there wide-eyed until one of the jester’s bells rolled off, and tinkled across the stage. The crowd erupted in laughter. The jester repeated "Fire, Fire”, and each time the crowd roared louder with laughter, demanding an encore.
I believe this is how the world will end. Not with some gnashing of teeth or apocalyptic wailing. It will end in riotous laughter with mankind screaming for an encore.
