It Never Made Sense

“What do you mean, ‘you wouldn’t do it’?”

She shrugged. “Exactly what it sounds like: if I was being handed world power, I wouldn’t take it. It’s like world domination, you see, and that concept has never made sense to me.”

The reporter paused a moment. “Could you maybe… erm, clarify what you mean? I mean, how does it not make sense?”

“Well, I’ve never liked the idea of world domination. Think about it: not everybody’s going to like you or every decision you make. There’s always going to be a few wackos trying to get rid of you. Oh sure, you might first say everything you do is for the good of the planet, but eventually you get very paranoid, and suddenly you become this homicidal, paranoid dictator. It’s a bit like Macbeth, you see.”

The reporter nodded skeptically as he scribbled. She peered quizzically at him. “You don’t seem to agree. I imagine you’d do something different in my place?”

“Well,” he began, slyly sliding his pencil behind his ear, “see, if I ruled the world…”
