Chapter 2: The Mean Bean

Hector had ordered four 100 lb. bags, yet there were five bags by the back door. The invoice showed only four bags, why were there five? The fifth bag was different and had no label. Since Hector had not paid for the bag he shrugged and decided to make a pot. The beans were red which he had never seen. The aroma was rich and filled the shop. He could hardly wait to taste the coffee. One sip and Hector knew this was great coffee, maybe the best he had ever tasted. Some of the customers had seen Hector take the sip, and were eager to try it themselves.

Two older women, Ethel and Betty, the town’s busy bodies were first in line. Everyone enjoyed a cup, declared it a wonderful blend, and went on their way. But Ethel and Betty stayed. Three hours, and eight cups, later they had run out of gossip, and left the shop together.
