Dante's Il Gatto Col Cappello: An English Translation

Rain fell, and the sun itself refused to show.
My sister and I alone, through the window we stared:
Nothing to do, we despaired, nowhere to go.

A bump at the door for which we were unprepared,
Into the hall stepped the Cat and he gave us a start.
He promised us fun and straight we were ensnared.

The fish in its bowl insisted that he should depart.
The Cat took the fish and the bowl and a ball of some kind,
All manner of things and he showed us the balancing art.

He fell, made a mess and the fish gave a piece of its mind.
Heeding it not, the Cat went and got a large crate.
When it was opened, two Things were no longer confined.

The Things shook our hands, the fish became irate.
They flew kites in the halls, bumping the walls, and I
Knew then that Mother would punish us: that was our fate.

I netted the Things; the Cat took them off with a sigh.
We despaired of the mess, but the Cat came back with a grin,
He cleaned the house, he turned and waved goodbye.

Then Mother came in and asked how our day had been.
