A Paper Clip for Remembrance
The teal T-shirt with sunshine yellow lettering and screen-printed ribbon usually seemed unappealing. Those just aren’t my colors. Sorry. They remind me of that nursery rhyme:
Green and yellow
Green and yellow
Mother be quick
I’m gonna be sick
and lay me down to die.
Last Friday the grey of winter must have left me yearning for unexpected colors and I yanked the shirt off of the shelf . I noticed that the sleeves were rolled up.
Still?
The last time I wore it was for Monica’s fundraiser in July. It was really hot that day. Did it sit on the shelf dirty for 6 months? Surely it’s been washed.
That’s when I saw the paper clips. They’re teal and yellow too. I stole the idea from the volleyball team. They use paper clips in team colors to hold their sleeves up.
Last July the bands were performing. Monica’s mother was selling raffle tickets. We had a magician. There was a silent auction.
But despite Team Monica’s efforts, she lies in bed with a morphine pump waiting for the cancer to take her.
