Dangerous Boundaries: Unwarranted Responses
The unfamiliar key felt strangely heavy and uncomfortable in Lukas’ hand. “I suppose there’s nothing to be done for it. Which room is this?”
“The one opposite your usual, M’lord, but let me assure you it’s as good in every way.” Sirach replied hastily.
Lukas frowned. He was not one that would strike down a nocomba who displeased him, but people often treated him that way- because of the others. Their arrogance had heightened with every use of their power, until their coin became fear rather than the minted silver that fueled the Empire.
“Wine and breakfast.” Lukas repeated wearily, tired of dealing with the repercussions of the other’s actions.
“As you will it.” Sirach bowed.
The stairs were crooked and narrow, resembling the owner in more than just wear. Lukas had spent many nights here and knew the secrets of passing to the second floor without stumbling.
He stopped at the door to his new room and glanced back. His regular room was off limits. Curiousity stirred.
