How long does love last?

Einstein was right. You can’t go faster than light. But with a dark energy converter you can reach a significant fraction of it. You don’t have the math for it, just understand that we can finally travel to the stars. The price though is everyone you ever knew was dead when you got back.

Here I was, a bright post grad engineering major, with the world in front of me. Jenny was my girl. We had plans. But when an opportunity of a position with the Prometheus project came up, I applied, never expecting to be chosen. You might say I won the lotto. I was going to be one of ten humans to go to a star.

Jenny didn’t quite see it that way. By the time I got back more than 140 years would have passed on earth. She’d be dead and two years would have passed for me. There were tears and when I told her she would forget me, she just said. “Shut up. I’ll love you forever if I want to.”

When I got back, it took me some time. But I finally found her tombstone.

“Keith, I loved you forever, because I wanted to”.
