The first tenet of magical theory is that all magical energy stems from life itself. This was said to be the first thing the gods revealed to The Healer.

Our basic understanding of this states that our capability for magical practice stems from the very life that animates (and binds our soul to) our physical form. By sacrificing life, we are able to release that life’s energy and harness it to accomplish magical means. In the process, we loosen the binds of the organism’s soul, and bring it closer to death.

Some believe that magical energy is gained through death, but this is not the case. In fact, the opposite is true: death can be the unfortunate consequence of the irresponsible harvesting of magical energy. It is this misunderstanding that is thought to have been the cause of The Healer’s forced exodus from her tribe, and this very misconception is what causes many modern magic-users to be scorned by the rest of society.
